Overview and Key Features of A387 Gr.11 Steel

A387 Gr.11 steel is a high-strength, heat-resistant alloy steel widely used in industrial applications that require excellent performance under elevated temperatures. As a grade under ASTM A387, this steel is specifically designed for pressure vessels, boilers, and high-pressure piping systems operating at temperatures up to 540°C. Its chemical composition includes chromium and molybdenum, which enhance its creep resistance, toughness, and high-temperature strength.

A387 Gr.11 steel is supplied in plates, welded assemblies, and forged forms. Its moderate carbon content ensures good weldability while alloying elements maintain high-temperature mechanical integrity. This makes it ideal for components like headers, boiler drums, and heat exchangers, which require durability under thermal and mechanical stress.

The mechanical properties of A387 Gr.11 steel are robust, offering tensile strength ranging from 485 to 620 MPa and yield strength around 275 MPa at room temperature. Its creep resistance allows for prolonged service at high temperatures without deformation or loss of structural integrity. Oxidation and corrosion resistance in normal industrial environments further enhance its long-term reliability.

Due to its combination of high-temperature performance, weldability, and toughness, A387 Gr.11 steel is a preferred material in energy, petrochemical, and industrial sectors. Its consistent quality and predictable behavior under stress ensure safety and efficiency in critical applications.
