Mechanical and Physical Properties of 304 Stainless Steel

Mechanical and Physical Properties of 304 Stainless Steel

304 stainless steel offers an outstanding balance of strength, toughness, and ductility. Its typical tensile strength is around 515–750 MPa, with yield strength of approximately 205 MPa in the annealed condition. These values can be improved through cold working, which increases hardness and mechanical strength without the need for heat treatment.

The steel's elongation rate of about 40% provides excellent formability, allowing it to be shaped into complex components without cracking. Its high toughness remains consistent even at cryogenic temperatures, making it ideal for low-temperature service applications.

Thermally, 304 has a melting point of around 1400°C and maintains good oxidation resistance up to 870°C in continuous service. Its thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity make it suitable for both industrial and decorative uses.

Overall, 304 stainless steel's mechanical and physical characteristics make it a preferred choice for structural, architectural, and industrial applications.
