Grades and uses of high strength low alloy steels

Grades and uses of high strength low alloy steels

There are many different grades of high strength low alloy steel. The intended uses of high strength low alloy steel depends primarily on chemical composition and grade application.

ASTM A36 is one of the most popular high strength low alloy steel. It is affordable and can be welded or machined. This versatility along with excellent mechanical properties makes it a popular choice for structural applications.

Weather resistant steel is also a type of high strength low alloy steel. It is often used in structural applications where coatings or paint layers are applied, such as bridge construction. Common grades of weather resistant steel include ASTM A242, ASTM A588.

High strength low alloy steels are not only used in structural applications, but are also frequently used in oil and gas transmission pipelines.

API 5L X70 is one of the most common materials used for modern piping. The "70" in the name refers to the minimum yield strength required by the American Petroleum Institute of 70,000 psi.

ASTM A573 is also used in the oil and gas industry. ASTM A573 is commonly used in the manufacture of storage tanks.

Of course, there are many other grades of high strength low alloy steel available. Some high strength low alloy steels are easier to weld, and some high-strength low-alloy steels have excellent wear resistance…

When choosing high-strength low-alloy steel, you should judge according to your own use.
