Surface preparation and storage before installation should not be overlooked. During transportation and storage, steel components should be protected from conditions that could create prolonged moisture retention or contamination. Once installed, allowing the steel to weather naturally under suitable atmospheric conditions is generally an important part of developing its characteristic surface.

Another advantage of weathering steel is its potential contribution to lifecycle efficiency. Reducing the need for repeated painting can simplify long-term maintenance, especially on bridges and large architectural structures where access for inspection and repainting can be expensive. However, the actual maintenance requirements depend on the exposure environment, structural design, and project specifications.

For engineers, fabricators, and buyers, successful use of Corten A Steel therefore involves more than selecting a weathering steel grade. Environmental assessment, drainage design, connection details, fabrication procedures, storage, and installation all contribute to the final performance of the structure.
