As part of the manufacture of a water turbine’s stay ring, during the cooling of a welded T-joint, a brittle fracture formed instantaneously in the vanes made from a 90-mm-thick normalized rolled S355J2 G3+N steel plate. The fracture in the central part of S355J2 G3+N steel plate’s thickness divided the plate into two, almost equally thick, layers. Such a cleavage was found to be the result of high residual tensile stresses acting through S355 J2 G3+N steel plate’s thickness. Due to a large thickness, the stiffness of the welded area was high, and so during cooling no plastic deformation of the plate could occur, which further increased the tendency for brittle fracture of S355 J2 G3+N steel plate.
