The Difference between steel pipe & steel tube

The Difference between steel pipe & steel tube

The steel pipe is hollow with a circular cross-section. It is used for fluid transportation. Its specifications are expressed by the series of nominal diameter and wall thickness. For steel pipes with the same nominal diameter, the wall thickness may be different, but the outer diameter is the same.

The steel tube is a general term for hollow tube, which can be of circular cross-section or any other shape. For round pipes, the specifications are determined by two aspects: outer diameter, inner diameter and wall thickness. The steel pipe is usually used in piping systems with small diameter pipes (5 inches or less), such as instrument pipes, heating pipes, hydraulic or pneumatic pipes. The steel tube is mainly used for internal and external heat conduction and heat exchange purposes, such as superheater tubes, reheater tubes, air-saving tubes and water wall tubes. Generally speaking, the unit price of the steel tube is higher than the unit price of the steel pipe.
