Mechanical Properties and Strength of SM490 steel

Mechanical Properties and Strength of SM490 steel

The performance of SM490 steel is defined by its superior mechanical strength combined with excellent flexibility. The grade's yield and tensile properties allow it to support large static and dynamic loads, making it ideal for structural members in bridges, high-rise buildings, and heavy machinery.

Under normal thickness conditions, SM490 steel offers a yield strength of around 355 MPa and a tensile strength between 490 and 610 MPa. This strength range provides a balance between rigidity and ductility, preventing sudden brittle failure under impact or stress.

The steel's elongation rate of approximately 20% provides sufficient plastic deformation before fracture, ensuring safety margins during overload conditions. This is especially important for welded structures subjected to vibration, wind, or seismic forces.

The fine-grain structure of SM490 enhances its notch toughness, which helps prevent crack propagation. In laboratory tests, SM490 plates maintain excellent Charpy impact values at temperatures as low as -20°C, highlighting its suitability for colder regions and offshore applications.

These mechanical advantages make SM490 steel a high-performing structural material trusted by engineers worldwide. It meets the requirements for projects that demand both strength and resilience, without sacrificing fabrication ease or long-term durability.
